The Great British Menu ~
Now that the latest program, The Great British Christmas Menu has ended on BBC2 ~ with the four winners from the first series ~ The Great British Menu ~ competing for the viewers overall vote. Many people have bought the book from the original series and I have decided to have a look myself.
There were 14 chefs competing from seven regions throughout the UK. They were to compete over eight weeks for the honour of cooking the winning dishes for the Queen's 80th birthday lunch in the Mansion House.
The regions and chefs ~
The South East ~ Gary Rhodes and Atul Kochhar
The North ~ Marcus Wareing and Simon Rimmer
Wales ~ Angela Hartnet and Bryn Williams
The South West ~ John Burton Race and Michael Caines
Northern Ireland ~ Paul Rankin and Richard Corrigan
The Midlands and East Anglia ~ Antony Worrall Thompson and Galton Blackiston
Scotland ~ Tom Lewis and Nick Nairn
The chefs remit was to design a seasonal (June) menu based upon produce from the chefs locale.
Also, there was a distinguished tasting panel who would vote blindly for each dish and thus select a winner from each region intially and an overall winner in a series of knock out competitions.
The panel consisted of Pru Leith, Oliver Peyton and Matthew Fort, details here.
Fabulous menus, with only the best of ingredients, the chefs know where to look for the best in their region, fish, beef, chicken, you name it. This is the secret of good cooking, excellent ingredients, plain simple recipes and careful preparation and execution.
A very well presented and enjoyable book.
Guide to each of the winners cookbooks (includes previous series -The Great British Menu cookbook).
Viewers will be able to vote on their dishes with the money raised going to Children in Need.
